Roundup: Saratoga baseball team off to fast start in tournament play

The Saratoga ‘A’ baseball team has opened the season well, going 4-0 out of the game, including winning the championship of the Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks blanked Grand Ridge, 10-0, to open the season in the tournament semifinals as Jacob Overbeck struck out nine in five innings. He got offensive support from Cody Bledsoe, who was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

In the title game, Saratoga picked up a 15-2 win over MVK. Winning pitcher Luke Olbrot helped his own cause by going 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while teammates Patrick McCabe and Ethan Heap (2 RBIs) were each 3 for 4. Overbeck was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

On Monday, Saratoga thumped MVK, 14-1, behind winning pitcher Ethan Heap. Patrick McCabe (double) and Overbeck (2 RBIs) were each 2 for 2.

On Tuesday, Saratoga blanked Dwight, 4-0, as Chad Heren threw a complete game with eight strikeouts. Heap was 2 for 3, while Heren had a pair of RBIs. Olbrot had a double and an RBI as well.


Wilmington 5, Coal City 1: The Warriors suffered their first loss of the season. Keegan Gagliardo threw five innings for Coal City (3-1), allowing three earned runs on seven hits and no walks. Connor Best hurled two perfect innings in relief. Payton Hutchings had two hits and the lone RBI, while Mason Mulcahy singled and scored in the last inning.

Saratoga ‘B’ 15, Dwight 7: Michael Feiden highlighted the offense for the Hawks with three hits, including a double, three stolen bases and four RBIs. Nathan Jepson had 2 hits and an RBI, while Owen Burns had two hits and two RBIs. Parker Skubic and Jared Schneider combined on the mound for the win.

MVK ‘B’ 8, Saratoga 4: Owen Burns and Nathan Jepson had two hits each to lead Saratoga, while Jepson, Matt Lawton and Michael Feiden all saw time on the mound.

Minooka ‘B’ 7, Reed-Custer 1: Evan Faifer and Bobby Dix combined on the mound for the win, allowing two hits and striking out eight. Zach Lange paced the Indians’ offense with two hits, while Casey Swanson added a double.


Channahon 9, Minooka 4: Hannah Justak led Minooka with three hits, while Cierra Bachmann and Maggie Joutras each had two hits.

Seneca 4, MVK 1: Leading the way for Seneca (5-3) was Gillian Culbreth on the mound with six strikeouts and scattering 4 hits.  Offensively the Raiders were led by Culbreth with two hits, Grace Alley with two hits, and Faith Hacker and Krista Eikleberry each had two-run singles. 

Seneca 13, Dwight 2: Gillian Culbreth, Krista Eikleberry and Maggie Cade all had two hits for the Raiders.


Calumet Christian 25-18-25, Families of Faith Christian Academy 14-25-19: Mia Billings and Samantha Grzymalski each had four kills to lead Channahon’s Families of Faith. Grzymalski added four points for the Screaming Eagles, while Billings had six blocks and Destiny Villalejo had five.


Wiers Baseball Academy: Travel ball tryouts will be held Saturday at noon at the Warrior indoor facility at 824 Liberty St. in Morris. Tryouts are for any player that may have an interest in playing travel ball this season. The Warrior program is looking for 10u, 11u baseball players to play in their program next summer. Also the 12u baseball team has one opening for a catcher or a pitcher, and 12u softball is still looking for a player.
