Dwight tops Morris on fifth man in golf opener

DWIGHT – In the season-opening match for the Morris boys golf team, it came down to the fifth man on the scorecard. Unfortunately for the Redskins, the Trojans got the better of them in that regard and came away with the win. The two teams tied with identical 185s after the first four players’ scores were tallied up, but Dwight’s fifth man, Braden Marks, shot 52 to get the best of Morris’ fifth, Gabe Sajnaj, who shot 53.

Morris’ Jake Hulbert took medalist honors with a round of 41 at Dwight Country Club, while teammate Nick McPherson shot 42. Dylan Callahan and Kolton Jacobsen each shot 51 for the Redskins, who were scheduled to play at Broken Arrow in the Lemont Shoot-Out on Friday night.

Dwight was led by Nathan Zabel, who shot 42, followed by Seth Galloway (45), Nick Schultz (47) and Drew Jensen (51).

On the junior varsity level, Jack Galloway’s round of 47 led Morris to a 202-223 win, while teammate Keaton Cryder shot 48.

Streator 182, Seneca 187, Reed-Custer 196: Seneca was led by co-medalist Ben Rohder with a round of 42 in the Interstate Eight triangular at High Point. Dan Armstrong (45), Auston Jashari (48) and Sean Baker (52) also scored for the Irish.

Streator beat Seneca 210-262 in the JV match.

Seneca sets record: The Lady Irish had a team record low against Dwight on Thursday, shooting a 207 as a team. Dwight had three only competitors so they could not post a team score. Seneca scorers were Sam DeGraaf (48), Natalie Hamilton (49), Randi Rohder (54) and Heather Vroman (56). Dwight posted scores of 46 by Ellie Shaw, 48 by Libby Beyer and 70 by Savannah Kline.

Saratoga 6, Elwood 2: The Hawks improved to 6-0 as Luke Olbrot allowed just two hits and struck out six in six innings. Jacob Overbeck led the offense by going 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Chad Heren had two RBIs and Alex Cameron delivered an RBI double.

Peru Parkside 8, Seneca 3: Molly Baker and Grace Alley each had two hits for the Raiders, who fell to 5-4. Gillian Culbreth pitched well in the loss, while Aubrey Cruz pitched three innings of solid relief.
