MORRIS – Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers EMS instructor Edward Ludwig was honored this year with the Illinois Department of Public Heath’s Instructor of the Year award.
During the EMS event outside the hospital, after awards had been announced to all the local EMS workers who have take part in heroic acts, Ludwig found out about the honor.
As his face turned red, to match his shirt, he accepted the award and congratulations from many of the EMS personnel who had just received their own awards and were taught by him.
“I’ve taught many of the guys who received awards today; I had no idea this was coming,” he said after receiving the congratulations from those both from fire departments and the hospital.
Ludwig started teaching in 2010 and is also a lieutenant for the Manhattan Fire Protection District.
“I’m also in the field and I try to take that experience and put it in the classroom,” he said. “I want those that go through my class to be prepared to address anyone, and I teach them as if my kids are going to be the next person they treat, or someone I know and love.”
He said it isn’t all about him, though – he just sets the foundation, and the field is what continues to teach them what they need to know once they leave his classes and are out in the field.
