Styf: Help us nominate Everyday Heroes in Will/Grundy

We often hear the comment that the news is far too negative.

The Herald-News is not alone in receiving that complaint.

That comes with the territory of bringing the news to the public.

But we also spend our fair share of time covering the positive going on in the community in our features, sports and news sections. State finals, groups making a positive impact, students creating amazing things and police being recognized for their work all make it into our pages.

One place we take pride in highlighting those positive aspects of the community is our Everday Heroes section.

Last year, we had 50 nominees and honored 16 recipients of the award.

They included a hospice volunteer; a dad and community volunteer who never skipped a beat while battling an illness; a young lady determined to use her knowledge of technology to stop cyberbullying; a woman who started a nonprofit organization to help change the lives of those affected by illness.

The same happened in 2015, as your neighbors and co-workers were honored for their contributions.

This year, we’re thrilled to work with ExxonMobil and other sponsors to bring Everyday Heroes back for a third year to The Herald-News and Morris Herald-News.

An Everyday Hero is a person who gives without expecting any recognition or accolades for doing so – those who selflessly donate their time and talents to help those in need or to better their community.

What’s your role?

Well, we need nominees. We need you to be our eyes and ears in the community on the people who deserve recognition.

We’re looking to bestow Everyday Hero awards on at least a dozen special people in Will and Grundy counties.

Nominees must be at least 13 years old, and live or work in either Will or Grundy counties at the time of nomination. Submit the name, hometown and workplace of your nominee, along with a letter of 500 or fewer words, describing why your nominee deserves the honor.

We will celebrate the recipients at an awards breakfast, scheduled for Sept. 8 at the Joliet Country Club. We’ll also devote a special section in the Sept. 10 Sunday edition of the paper (and online too) to our recipients.

Applications will be accepted through July 16 at theherald-news.com/heroes2017 or mail it to: The Herald-News, Attn: Everyday Heroes, 2175 Oneida St., Joliet, IL 60435. For more information, call projects and events manager Sarah Dilg at 815-280-4113.
