Two cats die in Morris house fire

MORRIS – A residential fire in the 400 block of Maple Drive left two cats dead on Saturday morning.

Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said two people and one cat were able to escape the fire.

A fourth cat did not escape but was resuscitated and is alive, as well.

Steffes said the fire caused extensive damage to the house, and while he did not know the cause, it did not look suspicious.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire in about 30 minutes.

Steffes also credited the use of donated oxygen masks designed specifically for cats and dogs as a big help in reviving the cat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
