Area Roundup: Coal City volleyball wins home opener

COAL CITY — The Coal City girls volleyball team had a successful home opener Thursday, defeating Interstate Eight Conference rival Streator, 25-16, 25-17.

Brooke Chapman had 22 assists to go with a kill and four digs for the Lady Coalers (6-8, 2-0), while Katelyn Sisk had 11 kills, a block and two aces. Blaire Harseim had four kills and 10 digs, while Lauren Phillips had three solo blocks and one block assists, two kills and an ace. Ali Brancato had 10 digs, while Olivia Skubic and Sydney Carlos each had three digs.

VOLLEYBALL

Minooka 25-25, Joliet Central 3-10: Allison Papesh had nine kills and three blocks to lead Minooka (7-1, 2-0) to the Southwest Prairie Conference win. Rocky Perinar added four kills and seven digs, while Holly Bonde had five kills and three blocks and Zoey Seput added four aces and 16 assists.

Manteno 25-25, Seneca 13-15: Lexi Greve led Seneca (2-5-3, 0-2) with six kills and five blocks in the Interstate Eight loss, while Morgan Pifer had 13 digs. Hannah Berg had three kills and three digs, while Sydney Poyner had seven assists. Kylie Winsor added six assists and five digs.

Gardner-South Wilmington 25-25, Iroquois West 13-18: Kaylee Steichen paced Gardner-South Wilmington with seven kills and five digs, while Carson Halpin had three kills and five digs. Mady Asbridge added 14 assists and three kills for the Panthers (4-2).

Newark 25-25, Leland-Earlville 12-16: Newark opened Little Ten Conference play with the win as Madi Malone had 13 kills, seven digs and a block. Mattie Chapman had eight kills and two blocks for the Lady Norse (7-1, 1-0), while Meggie Scott had five digs and three aces.

BOYS SOCCER

DeKalb 4, Morris 1: Morris suffered the Northern Illinois Big 12 loss as Connor McGlynn had the only goal, off an assist from Conner Shaw.

Coal City 3, Beecher 1: Ben Hawkins had a hand in all three goals for Coal City (6-2-1). He started the scoring with a penalty kick, then assisted on a goal by Austin Friddle. Hawkins then added a header off an assist from Alex Friddle. Hunter Bannon had 12 saves in goal.

Oswego 4, Minooka 0: Carson Heglund made six saves in goal for Minooka (3-1-2).

GIRLS TENNIS

Plainfield North 4, Minooka 3: Winners for Minooka (4-1) were the doubles team of Kacie More and Ireland Binkowski, Maddison Wittkofsk and Grace Boeringa, and Alyssa Taylor and McKenna O’Donnell.

GRADE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Coal City 14, Richland 0: Winning pitcher Brady Best struck out four in two hitless innings. Best also went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. Ashton Harvey was 2 for 2 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, while Josh Hutchings went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Aiden Hansen was 2 for w with three RBIs.

Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 8, Shorewood Holy Family 7: Andrew Litwiller had two hits and struck out nine as the starting pitcher for MVK (9-5). Matt Cruise added a two-run double and was the winning pitcher in relief. Bryce Roe added two singles, while Jacob Johnson drove in the winning run with a squeeze bunt.
