Morris wrestling team opens with tight win over Princeton

MORRIS — The Morris wrestling team opened its season with a thrilling, 39-38 win over Princeton last Tuesday. The meet was competive from the start, with several lead changes along the way before Morris' Robbie Bates put the meet away with a fall in the 182-pound match.

Other Morris winners were .Brandon Mazzoni (113), Bryce Claypool (120), Logan Severson (126), Zach Sater (132), Jakob Eisenbeis (145), and Colby Eschenbaum (220).

On Thursday, Morris was defeated by Sterling 47-18. Winners for Morris were Tristan Martin (106), Cody Baldridge (182), and R.J. Roderick (285).

On Saturday, Morris competed at the Riverside-Brookfield quad. The Redskins defeated Hubbard, 78-0, and beat Vernon Hills, 39-34. The match with Riverside-Brookfield endd in a 39-39 tie, but Morris lost on the cirteria of most first points scored.

Against Hubbard, Morris wins belonged to Tristan Martin (106), Brandon Mazzoni (113), Bryce Claypool (120), Logan Severson (126), Zach Sater (132), Toby Martinez (138), Jacob Eisenbeis (145), Mason Young (152), Jacob Barkley (160), Mason L ewis (170), Cody Baldridge (182), Jake Fitch (195), Zach Bankowski (220) and R.J. Roderick (285). Picking up wins against Vernon Hills were Eisenbeis (145), Young (152), Barkley (160), Baldridge (182), Robert Bates (195), Bankowski (220) and Jake Hairold (285). Winning for the Redskins against Riverside-Brookfield were Martin (106), Mazzoni (113), Claypool (120), Eisenbeis (145), Baldridge (182), Bates (195) and Roderick (285).

Seneca 40, Beardstown 36: Recording wins for the Irish were Luke Sangston (106), Ben Virgo (113), Jackson Beene (145), Edgar Reyes (160), Maveric Varland (170), Mason Dooley (182), and Levi Clark (195).

Seneca Invitational: The Fighting Irish took second in the 15-team event Saturday, finishing with 170 points, trailing only Clifton Central's total of 295.5. Ben Virgo was the top finisher for Seneca, going 3-0 to capture first place in the 113-pound weight division. Virgo defeated Streator's Luis Lopez by a 10-2 major decision in the title bout. Other placers for the Irish were Luke Sangston (106, 3-1, third), Brett Yegge (120, 1-2, fourth), Cody Carvell (126, 2-3, sixth), Zane Comrie (132, 2-2, fourth), Colt Aldrich (152, 1-3, sixth), Michael Morse (160, 2-1, second), Mason Dooley (170, 4-1, third), Gavin Robertson (182, 3-1, third), Levi Clark (195, 2-2, fifth), and Nathan Elliott (220, 3-2, fifth).
