CHANNAHON – An 11-year-old boy was struck by a car as he was biking to school, authorities said.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday, Will County Sheriff's deputies were called to McEvilly Road and Hickory Lane in Channahon Township after receiving a report of an accident.
When the deputies arrived, they found an 11-year-old boy being treated by Channahon Fire Protection District paramedics. The youth had been reportedly struck by a 2014 Ford Fusion while he was riding his 10-speed Roadmaster mountain bicycle, said Kathy Hoffmeyer, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, in an email.
The boy was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and treated for bruising and abrasions.
Deputies spoke with three witnesses and to the driver of the Ford Fusion, Zachary Barkdull, 24, of Joliet.
Barkdull allegedly told deputies that while he was driving eastbound on McEvilly Road, he saw a bicyclist alongside the road on the fog line.
As Barkdull was passing, the boy slightly turned into the front passenger side of the car, striking it and causing the boy to go off into the ditch, Hoffmeyer said. The three witnesses confirmed the story.
Barkdull was cited for improper overtaking of a bicycle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
