Classes for breastfeeding, new siblings and new parents are available

MORRIS – Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers has announced its schedule of childbirth and family classes for September.

Introduction to Breastfeeding will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Family Birthing Suites classroom at Morris Hospital, located at 150 W. High St., Morris. Taught by an obstetrical nurse/certified lactation consultant, the class focuses on the benefits of breastfeeding, pumping techniques and tips for returning to work. Breastfeeding moms also will get advice to help solve problems related to breastfeeding. Nursing mothers are welcome to bring their infants. The class is free.

A Baby Care Basics class will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the board room at the hospital. This class gives parents-to-be all the information they need to know to bring their baby home with confidence, including the latest information to ease parents into the basics of caring for their newborn. Through presentation and demonstrations, this class will include newborn appearance/activity, feeding, warning signs and safety. The cost is $15 a couple.

A New Siblings class will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 17 in the Family Birthing Suites classroom at Morris Hospital. This class for expecting parents and their children explores expectations of a being a super sibling. Through hands-on activities and games, siblings-to-be will learn how a newborn baby looks and acts and what happens while mom and baby are in the hospital. Activities, discussion and a tour of the family birthing suites helps children feel a part of the experience. Each child should bring a doll or stuffed animal. The cost is $5 a child.

An online version of the childbirth class is available through the Morris Hospital website. This online learning experience covers the birth process and medical procedures through instructive video clips, animations and interactive games. Expecting moms also will get a sense of what labor is really like by watching several birth stories.
