MORRIS – In a quick meeting Monday, the Morris City Council approved an ordinance that would help create a list of potential police officer candidates for the city’s police department.
The contract with Stanard and Associates Inc., a human resources firm from Chicago, accepts applications, communicates with applicants and discusses candidates with the Morris Board of Police Commissioners.
Morris Police Chief John Severson said the department tries to keep a running list of potential patrolman hires because the hiring process can take months.
Creating the list can take approximately four months from the application process to the final posting. And there is more to the hiring process after that.
“Then we do backgrounds, we send them for psych evaluations, we send them through a polygraph test and a medical exam,” Severson said. “Those are conditions of employment. If they don’t pass those conditions, now you washed them and go on to the next.”
Even after a list is generated, Severson said, between a third and a half of the candidates don’t make the cut because of things found on a background check or during the other evaluations.
“You’re looking at potentially six months,” he said.
The city will pay $2,500 to Stanard for the services, Alderman Randy Larson said.
The council also approved a request by the Morris Downtown Development Partnership to use various city streets for the annual Liberty Arts Festival between Thursday, July 18, and Saturday, July 20.
The city council next meets Tuesday, Feb. 19.
