Morris Hospital announces programs for April

MORRIS – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers has announced its schedule of childbirth and family classes for April.

Introduction to Breastfeeding will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, in the Family Birthing Suites Classroom at Morris Hospital, 150 W. High St., Morris. Taught by an obstetrical nurse/certified lactation consultant, the class focuses on the benefits of breastfeeding, pumping techniques, and tips for returning to work. Breastfeeding moms will also get advice to help solve problems related to breastfeeding. Nursing mothers are welcome to bring their infants. The class is free.

A New Siblings class will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, in the Family Birthing Suites Classroom at Morris Hospital. This fun and interactive experience for expecting parents and their children explores expectations of a being a super sibling. Through hands-on activities and games, siblings-to-be will learn how a newborn baby looks and acts and what happens while mom and baby are in the hospital. Activities, discussion, and a tour of the family birthing suites helps children feel a part of the experience. Each child should bring a doll or stuffed animal. The cost is $5 a child.

A Prepared Childbirth class will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Family Birthing Suites classroom. Designed for expectant parents during their last trimester of pregnancy, the class covers labor, comfort measures, relaxation and medical interventions, and pain management options. The class concludes with a tour of Morris Hospital’s Family Birthing Suites, along with an explanation of delivery and post-partum care. The cost is $60 a couple.

An online version of the childbirth class is available through the Morris Hospital website. This unique online learning experience covers the birth process and medical procedures through instructive video clips, animations and interactive games. Expecting moms also will get a sense of what labor is really like by watching several birth stories. Tours of the Family Birthing Suites at Morris Hospital can be scheduled upon request. Pre-diabetes class

The Morris Hospital Diabetes Education Center is hosting a free Pre-Diabetes class from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Education Room 1 on the lower level of Morris Hospital, 150 W. High St., Morris.

Led by a diabetes educator, the class will focus on healthy eating, physical activity and lifestyle behaviors that help prevent or delay the development of diabetes. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Scholarship offers

The Morris Hospital Foundation is offering scholarships to students who are pursuing an education in healthcare. The scholarships are intended to encourage education in any health-related course of study while enhancing the availability of health care providers in the local community.

The $1,000 Carol Harrington Endowed Morris Hospital Foundation Scholarship and the $1,000 Relucio Family Healthcare Scholarship are available to students pursuing undergraduate education in a health care related field.

Applicants must be accepted into, or currently enrolled in, a hospital-related health care curriculum at an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school and reside in one of the 19 communities served by Morris Hospital, which include Braceville, Braidwood, Channahon, Coal City, Dwight, Gardner, Kinsman, Marseilles, Mazon, Minooka, Morris, Newark, Ottawa, Ransom, Seneca, South Wilmington, Verona, Wilmington and Yorkville.

The Hugo Avalos Endowed Scholarship awards up to $5,000 to an Illinois resident who has been accepted into or is currently enrolled in an accredited medical school, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant program.
