Visitors will get their first chance to see the major changes implemented at Morris Hospital this weekend. On Sunday, the hospital will host a community open house from 2-4 p.m., to celebrate the completion of the first phase of a major modernization project.
Guests will get to go behind-the-scenes of the new emergency department before the anticipated February opening for patient care. The new emergency department features all private exam rooms, a separate, low acuity area to expedite treatment of patients with less serious illness and injuries, and enhanced trauma and critical care treatment areas.
Tours of the new infusion therapy center, new women’s imaging center, new main lobby and new outpatient lab will also be provided, along with demonstrations of the new self-registration technology that’s coming to Morris Hospital in early 2020.
Renovations began in the spring of 2019 as part of a $33.5 million, multi-phase modernization project that is designed to enhance patient and visitor comfort, experience and privacy while optimizing use of space for patient care services. This is the first major renovation on the hospital main campus since 2006.
Additional phases of the modernization project will result in a new cardiac diagnostic testing area and renovated diagnostic imaging department.
Parking will be on the east side of the hospital campus. In case of inclement weather, anyone planning to attend the open house is encouraged to check the Morris Hospital website or Facebook page before leaving home.
Meanwhile, starting on Monday, everyone coming to Morris Hospital for outpatient services will use the main entrance off High Street, the same entrance that is used to visit hospitalized patients. Outpatient services includes all diagnostic imaging testing, lab, cardiology services and infusion therapy, as well as outpatient surgery. This is a permanent change; there will no longer be a separate outpatient entrance.
The change is part of the modernization project. The hospital will continue to have a dedicated emergency entrance, which is currently located on the west side of the building off Lisbon Street. However, when the new emergency department officially opens in February, the emergency entrance will also move to the east side of the building, to the immediate north of the main entrance. Like today, the emergency entrance will be clearly identified with signage.
In preparation for the change in traffic patterns, Morris Hospital has extended its main entrance parking lot all the way to Liberty Street. Additional handicap parking spaces have also been added to the east side of the hospital campus. The circle drive at the main entrance will continue to be available for drop offs and pick-ups.
