Cause of Muskie Trail fire is ‘undetermined’

Created: Friday, August 16, 2013 9:31 p.m. CST

GOOSE LAKE TWP. — The cause of a fire that destroyed a garage and boat on Muskie Trail in Goose Lake Township Thursday is undetermined.

A call came into the Coal City Fire District at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday for a structure fire at 5860 E. Muskie Trail, said Nick Doerfler, spokesperson for the Coal City Fire Protection District.

On Friday, the investigation determined the fire began outside of the garage, but it was not clear if it started in the neighboring pontoon boat or if it spread from a fire outside of the boat, said Doerfler.

The cause is undetermined due to conflicting evidence on how it started, he said.

There was one occupant in the attached house who called 9-1-1 and who was trying to extinguish the fire with a water hose when responders arrived, said Doerfler. No one was injured in the incident.

Damage occurred to the neighbor’s vehicle and basketball hoop due to the heat from the fire. About $40,000 worth of damage occurred to the garage, boat and house where the fire originally occurred.
