If you're building a new home or remodeling a bathroom, it's important to know the benefits of a waterproof shower. "Tile in and of itself isn't waterproof," said Laura Leppert, Interior Designer for Steve's Flooring & Design in Morris. "To have a waterproof shower, you need a special waterproofing system behind the tile. We offer the Schluter ®-Shower System, which is waterproof and offers a vapor-tight system."
According to Leppert, evidence of moisture can often be found during a bathroom remodel when the walls are opened up. "Water can wick its way through the wall cement board or moisture resistant drywall behind the wall tiles and then up the substrates inside the wall, which may be wood framing covered with drywall or plaster. It can also soak down through floor cement board underlayment and into the plywood, or oriented strand board subflooring" she added. "This creates large areas where mold can breed."
Tile and grout joints are not waterproof, even when sealed. When moisture penetrates these areas and collects in the wall cavities or the floor structure, it can cause moisture penetration and the growth of mold and mildew.
The Schluter ®-Shower System is an integrated family of products that simplifies tiled shower installations. "The process includes the installation of solid backing panels on the walls, and a sloped mortar bed or prefabricated KERDI shower base on the floor. A special drain is installed into the base and then the waterproofing membrane is bonded to the surfaces of the walls and base," explained Leppert. This system creates a tile ready waterproof pan for the base of the shower. "What makes the Schluter ®-Shower System unique is the customization of different designs and sizes of showers and it is fully backed by a lifetime warranty. “
Schluter tile edge profiles are available for more appealing and designer looks. They finish edges when tile bullnose is not available. Schluter offers many styles and sizes of tileable shower seats and recessed niches for soap and shampoo. "Another popular feature we offer is a warmed tiled shower floor," said Leppert. "With DITRA-HEAT, the tiled floors are heated, adding comfort in the shower."
A properly installed Schluter waterproof shower system should last for the life of the home. For more information about the waterproof Schluter ®-Shower System stop in our store and see our Schluter shower display and talk to Laura or Nick about the advantages of the Schluter Shower Systems.
