After the loss of a beloved family member or friend, survivors are often dealing with grief that can become overwhelming. For some, the support of family and friends may not be enough to help assuage the sadness they feel. At U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home, grief counseling is offered as part of their comprehensive funeral services.
"We want our clients to know they aren't alone," said John Callahan, owner of U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home. "Our staff members are always available to connect clients who are struggling with overwhelming grief with an appropriate counseling service or support organization."
Dr. Virginia Simpson, the Executive Counseling Director at U.C. Davis - Callahan, has coordinated a variety of grief counseling resources that are available to those seeking help for coping with grief. Interactive Aftercare offers online grief education, and online affirmation emails offer daily messages of hope and healing.
"We also refer our clients to Kathy Cherven, RN, LCPC, a specialist in loss, grief therapy, and counseling," added Callahan. "She offers a support group that meets on the first Wednesday of each month. It's so helpful to share your experience with others who are going through a similar situation, and to learn from theirs. If interested, please register at www.griefrollercoaster.com, or call 815-416-9036."
GriefShare is another grief support group that is recommended by U.C. Davis - Callahan. Meetings take place at Peace Chapel in Morris. For information, visit www.griefshare.org, or call 815-942-4462.
"There are additional grief support services, both in person and online, listed on our website," said Callahan. "The Center for Loss & Transition, GriefNet, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization are all wonderful resources for anyone dealing with loss and grief."
