While it's terrible to lose a loved one during any time of the year, it can be especially difficult during the holiday season. Memories of past holidays, and traditions that will have to change, can make the loss feel even more intense. Most people have the support of family and friends, but in some cases it may not be enough to relieve the stress and overwhelming sadness during such a difficult time.
The owner and staff members at U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home witness such sadness every year during the holiday season, and make it their goal to let their clients know that they aren't alone. "We offer grief counseling to our customers who are struggling with grief all year long, but especially during the holidays," explained John Callahan, owner of U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home. "We refer them to Kathy Cherven, RN, LCPC, a professional grief counselor here in Morris. The group sessions are for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one. They meet the first Wednesday of each month; to register, those interested can call 815-416-9036, or visit www.griefrollercoaster.com."
Another support group that U.C. Davis - Callahan recommends is GriefShare. "This organization is another wonderful resource for anyone experiencing extreme grief," added Callahan. "Anyone needing these services should visit www.griefshare.org."
Another alternative is the Center for Loss & Transition, which provides information and inspiration regarding loss and grief, illness and dying, life transitions, and spirituality, which can be uplifting and comforting during the stressful holiday season.
GriefNet, an online community for people dealing with grief, death, and major loss, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, which deals with end-of-life care, can also provide much-needed support and guidance.
