This year’s Christmas in July event for the residents of the Manteno Veteran’s Home, sponsored by the Coal City Public Library District and St. Juvin Post 1336 VFW, wrapped up on Aug. 13 with the lastdelivery of goodies.
The library and one of the new partners, New Hope Presbyterian Church, collected items donated by congregation members and library patrons while the other new partner Whitmore Ace Hardware in Coal City conducted a “round up” where customers were offered the option of rounding up their purchases to the next even dollar with the extra money going to buy items for the Manteno vets.
Whitmore Ace’s round up brought in just over $1,280 which St. Juvin Post used to buy sweat shirts, underwear, batteries, diabetic socks, disposable cups and eating utensils, sandwich bags, and snack items. This year the volunteers at the home asked for root beer and ice cream to make root beer floats for the residents. Sixteen gallons of ice cream and eighteen gallons of root beer were delivered by St. Juvin members playing Santa’s helpers.
Christmas in July was a huge success thanks to the generosity of the community. St. Juvin members thanked the library, church and especially the Whitmore owners David and Michael Cripe, store manager Nicole Mc Daniel and the entire Whitmore staff for their commitment to the vets at Manteno and their support of Christmas in July.
