Morris Hospital provides comprehensive patient care, including maternity and infant care, a cardiac unit, cancer care, a sleep clinic, and more. The hospital has earned national recognition for patient experience from Healthgrades.

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is now recognized for two distinctions in quality excellence from Healthgrades.

The hospital recently earned the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award and the Healthgrades 2019 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Morris Hospital is one of 77 hospitals out of more than 4,500 evaluated that achieved both distinctions from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

“This distinction from Healthgrades is significant for two reasons,” says Mark Steadham, President & CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. “Firstly, it recognizes that our employees and medical staff do an excellent job safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications. Secondly, the recognition indicates that our team provides an excellent experience for patients during their hospital stay. We are very proud to be among the top 2% of eligible hospitals in the nation to receive both of these awards.”

Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award

According to Healthgrades, 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safety for patients in the Medicare population during the study period 2015 to 2017, as measured by objective outcomes (risk-adjusted patient safety indicator rates) for 14 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Healthgrades notes that if all hospitals in the country performed at the same level as award recipients for each of the 14 Patient Safety Indicators evaluated by AHRQ, 127,667 patient safety events could have been avoided. In addition, Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were, as compared to patients at non-recipients hospitals, on average:

• 55.9% less likely to experience an accidental cut, puncture, perforation or hemorrhage during medical care

• 50.9% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest

• 64.4% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital

• 57% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital

Healthgrades 2019 Outstanding Patient Experience Award

Morris Hospital was also recognized for outstanding patient experience.

Healthgrades evaluated patient experience performance by applying a scoring methodology to nine patient experience measures, using data collected from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems patient survey conducted by all hospitals. The survey questions focus on patients’ perspectives of their care in the hospital, ranging from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms to factors such as provider communication and responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family.

“Patient experience and patient safety go hand in hand, and we’re proud to recognize the hospitals that make both a top priority in order to provide patients with the best care possible,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Healthgrades. “Consumers will in turn be able to use this information to feel confident when making important decisions about where they receive care.”

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers operates 25 locations, including the 89-bed Morris Hospital, as well locations in Braidwood, Channahon, Coal City, Dwight, Gardner, Marseilles, Mazon, Minooka, Morris, Newark, Ottawa and Yorkville.

The healthcare system has more than 1,700 healthcare professionals, physicians and volunteers, and includes a cardiac unit, a radiation therapy center, an intensive care unit, a sleep center, and immediate care services at three locations.

Morris Hospital is a Level II trauma center, Level II perinatal care provider and Primary Stroke Center, and has been listed on Becker’s Hospital Review’s “100 Great Community Hospitals” list since 2016.

Morris Hospital is currently undergoing a two-year, $33.5 million modernization project on its main campus that will result in a new emergency department, women’s imaging center, infusion therapy center, cardiac diagnostics department, blood draw area, and registration/reception, along with renovations to the cath lab and imaging department.

Statistics used to determine the ratings are calculated from Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology which is based primarily on AHRQ technical specifications (Version 5e and 2018) to MedPAR data for years 2015 through 2017 and represent 3-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
