Rehearsals already are underway for the first show of the 2019-20 season, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” by Edgar Allan Poe and Jack Neary, directed by Matt Johnson and produced through Samuel French.
The story is based on the familiar Poe short story and fans will recognize those elements, but Neary goes deeper into the story and characters. It involves James Brookfield, an up-and-coming writer of potboilers from New York City, who is invited to the Boston home of his childhood friend, Roderick Usher. His host suggests he “chronicle the evolution” of the House of Usher. What begins for Brookfield as a pleasant distraction from the busy hubhub of New York’s literary circles turns into a maelstrom of horror when he slowly discovers Usher’s secret intent and realizes that the life of Usher’s sister, Madeline, as well as Brookfield’s own life, are in terrible danger.
Show dates are Oct. 4-6 and 11-13. Individual tickets are $15 presale or $20 at the door and can be purchased at morristheatreguild.org.
