MORRIS – Morris junior wrestler Bryce Claypool was seeded third at 145 in the Class 2A Rich East Regional last weekend. Claypool pinned the two wrestlers seeded above him and came away with the regional championship, advancing to this weekend's Rochelle Sectional with a 25-9 record on the year.
MHN: How did it feel to stand on the top step of the podium?
Claypool: It felt great. I was seeded third, so that gave me some motivation. I didn't think I was going to lose any matches.
MHN: What did you do that made you so successful that day?
Claypool: I wrestled well. I was real pumped up for the first match and I pinned my first guy. After that, I just felt unstoppable. I did a good job of taking guys down and keeping pressure on them and not letting up. And, when I was on the bottom, I was able to turn things around and get the advantage again.
MHN: Is it nice to be taking a big group to sectionals?
Claypool: Yeah, there's five of us going. That will be cool to have that many teammates there. And, we are able to practice together and know we have good partners. It's definitely more fun with a lot of people.
MHN: What is your goal at sectionals?
Claypool: I want to keep wrestling well and advance to state.
