The Goose Lake Prairie Partners announced Friday that the Prairie Partner Volunteer of the Year Award for 2020 was presented to Jan Alexander of Oswego.
Ms. Alexander joined the Partners in 2010. During her first couple years with the Partners she was especially keen on demonstrating quilting during the Cabin Festivals. However, as the Partners experienced low return on the profits of serving sandwiches during their Festivals, they were looking for ways to make a profit from their endeavor.
Alexander took a class to become certified allowing her to cook at Cabin Fest and Prairie Day. She found a grill that had been discarded, repaired it and delivered it to the park. When in the food tent Alexander’s presence brings camaraderie and laughter to make for a joyful day. Instead of having to hire a cook with a grill in the past, the Partners now enjoy grilling independence. Just recently, they were gifted with a new grill. They will continue to achieve raising funds for educating our visitors with the contributions Alexander has willingly given to the park and their group.
Alexander has also been an asset to our planning of projects. Her voice has been heard on many occasions with thoughtful contributions to our discussions, be in a meeting or over the phone.
Jan Alexander is the Volunteer of the Year for 2020, and her name has been added to the Honor Roll of volunteers recognized for their contribution to the Goose Lake Prairie Partners, Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Plaque of Volunteers recognized for their contributions hangs in the Visitor Center at GLPSNA.
