On July 14, 2017, Reeves and Baskerville funeral homes welcomed the newest member of their staff, and her name is Miss Katie. Katie, is a 2 month old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who will take on the role as a grief therapy companion at all of the Reeves and Baskerville funeral home locations.
In a survey commissioned by the National Funeral Directors Association earlier this year, more than half of respondents said they would be somewhat, very or extremely interested in having a therapy dog present at a funeral or memorial service.
Therapy dogs are becoming more and more commonly found in schools, hospitals and nursing homes. They cheer up the lives of people of all ages, bring comfort when needed, show unconditional love, and provide healing and companionship to those in need.
It is our hope that following adequate training, schooling and therapy certification, Katie will be able to console bereaved families coping with the loss of a loved one.
The journey of Katie's training will take time, however she has already made appearances at a visitation and several funeral arrangements. The smiles that she puts on faces, when she enters the room, has only reinforced our decision to bring on a therapy dog. King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are known for their docile demeanor, and with only a few days under her belt, Katie is already making impressions. We will continue to update on Katie's progress through our Facebook page, and welcome families to ask for Katie when they are visiting the funeral home.
