After the loss of a beloved family member or friend, the grieving process can be a long, arduous road. When the holidays approach, it can be even more difficult to cope, as the memories of spending past holidays together make the loss feel even more intense. In some cases, the support of friends and close family may not be enough to relieve the overwhelming sadness.
At U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home, staff members are available to connect clients and their family members who are struggling with grief during the holidays with an appropriate counseling or support organization. The goal is for people to know that they aren't alone.
"We refer our customers to Kathy Cherven, RN, LCPC, who offers loss and grief counseling services here in Morris," said Victoria Brown, Funeral Director for U.C. Davis - Callahan Funeral Home. "The group is for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, and it meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Anyone interested can register at www.griefrollercoaster.com, or call 815-416-9036."
GriefShare is another support group recommended by U.C. Davis - Callahan. The group meets at Peace Chapel at 852 School Street in Morris. For information, visit www.griefshare.org, or call 815-942-4462.
"We also recommend aftercare grief sessions to help our clients work through their despair," added Brown. "The Center for Loss & Transition provides information and inspiration in the areas of loss and grief, illness and dying, life transition, and spirituality. This can be especially helpful during the stressful holiday season." Additional support services include GriefNet, an online community of persons dealing with grief, death, and major loss, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, which deals with end-of-life care.
