This month, I would like to speak on Grandparents and their impact on grandchildren. This is a personal topic, as I cannot begin to express how blessed I was to have such a special relationship with my grandmother after the passing of my father. My grandmother was significant in how I interact with families today, and I believe made me a better funeral director.
In recent studies it has been found that grandparents ease separation anxiety in most cases by providing a safe and loving environment. The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren also elevate happiness in both parties. According to a study out of Boston College, “a positive emotional connection between grandparents and grandchildren inoculates both against symptoms of depression.”
Grandparents serve as a mental security blanket, and can provide priceless knowledge and experience. The stories and life lessons shared of times gone by can be repurposed and utilized as kids grow and mature.
A University of Oxford study also revealed a direct correlation between grandparent involvement and positive social behavior in kids: “Children…with a high level of grandparental involvement had fewer emotional and behavioral problems.”
Now more than ever grandparents are playing a more significant role in their grandchildren’s life, and we commend those who are not only biological grandparents, but act in the roles, that of grandparents.
